Becky Margonelli

Assemblage

Born in 1971 Becky Margonelli is an assemblage artist working with found paper.

She received a BFA in sculpture and drawing from Bard College, studying with Kiki Smith, Nancy Bowen and Vito Acconci. After years in the art department of the New York Times, Becky returned to the practice of making art, working several years on the lower east side of New York City before moving to Turkey in 2017.

She currently works out of a studio in Cihangir, Istanbul.

Becky Margonelli's work is made of tightly rolled strips of found discarded paper--junk mail, newspaper and copier paper. The coils are glued to create dense patterns and textures, mostly monochromatic with subtle color variations based on the printing on the paper. Sometimes the pieces play off a grid structure, others are apparently random with deliberate decisions on spacing and surface based on height, color, width and tightness.
